Hector Perla’s article ( SF Chronicle, 3/18/13) mentions that free market capitalism is the cause of poverty, squalor and sickness. The wealthy of our bay area raise money for causes to help the poor and sick. The rich and the powerful develop foundations to aid education and research. Media stars use their images to help alleviate pain and suffering. However, none of them are willing to work to change the structures of society, which make them wealthy and cause the descending poverty spirals. Capitalism does work well for a broad economy. But it always leaves a trail of dreadful poverty in its wake.
